Posted Apr 6/13 - The Braves take 5-2 loss to Musselman Applemen

Buck Bacot did all he could to give the Braves a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Musselman Applemen, as the Braves lost 5-2 in seven innings at Socastee on Saturday.

Bacot did his best to jumpstart the offense for the Braves, reaching base two times. He singled in the third inning.

Chris Schleos got it done on the hill on the way to a win. He allowed two runs over seven innings. Schleos struck out five, walked two and gave up five hits.

The top of the second saw Musselman Applemen take an early lead, 1-0. Musselman Applemen's threat began with a single by Jacob Whitmore. A single by Tyler Gross then moved Whitmore from first to second. Hunter Dalton singled, plating Whitmore.

The Braves scored one run of their own in the second. The Braves scored on an RBI single by Jason Farria.

Musselman Applemen didn't relinquish the lead after scoring one run in the third inning when it scored on an RBI double by Whitmore.

Musselman Applemen piled on two more runs in the top of the seventh. The inning looked promising, as Whitmore singled, scoring Maverick Keller to kick things off. That was followed up by Gross' single, bringing home Darrin Zombro.

Posted Apr 6/13 - The Braves fend off Pleasure Park High's late push, hold on 3-2

Pleasure Park High wasn't able to come back from the big hole it dug itself into against the Braves, and Pleasure Park High lost 3-2 to the Braves after falling behind by two runs in the sixth inning.

Pleasure Park High scored one run in the seventh on an RBI single by Ryan Hart.  Despite its efforts, Pleasure Park High couldn't get over the hump.

Austin Schmitz's six strikeouts were enough to push the Braves past Pleasure Park.  Schmitz allowed one earned run on three hits and four walks over six innings.

The top of the first saw Pleasure Park High take an early lead, 1-0.

The lead stayed with the Braves after the third, when they scored two runs on a fielder's choice and a hit by pitch.

Posted Apr 25/12 - IT IS TIME
Players, it's the playoffs and it is time to step up.

This is what you have been practicing for and working hard for since last November.

THIS IS THE MOMENT, SEIZE THE MOMENT!

You are a TEAM, you have been playing together for a long time, in some cases for years.  You know each others strengths and each others weaknesses - help each other - accept your team mates help and he will accept yours when you give it.  We will not win a single game if we don't truly believe in each other and have each others back.  Don't try to do it all yourself, know (and I mean truly believe it from the very bottom of your heart) that if you miss a ball, fail to hit, give up a run - it doesn't matter because your team mates will be there to bail you out, and you will be there to bail them out when they need it.

Know that you are good,  and good teams perform when it counts.  You have won 17 games, you only gave up an average of 3 runs a game, you scored an average of 6+ runs per game  - that is almost a run per inning (remember that you didn't hit 7 times in many games because we were home team and a few other times we won in less innings due to the mercy rule - yeah like the time we kicked St James butt).  You can play with anyone - go out and do it !  You don't need me or mom/dad or coach to tell you.  Believe it.  Go out and play to your ability and everything will take care of itself.  The only thing you control is doing your best.  DO IT, and don't make excuses.

It doesn't matter that the umpire stinks, it doesn't matter that the other team got a good player halfway  through the season, it doesn't matter that you didn't get to hit in practice, it doesn't matter weather your coach yelled, it doesn't matter if your coach was  silent, it doesn't matter if the coach folds his arms and stares at the ground all day - you are the ones playing, you are the ones with the talent, you are the ones that can get yourself ready,  you are the ones that are going to win!  Win despite all that! In the words of Coach Bennett, BE A DOG!

Put everything behind you and just go out there and play!  Play like you can.  Play hard, Have Fun and everything will take care of itself.

To all of you, but especially for the seniors, allow me to suggest a motto  "Believe, DLIE"  -

which stands for "Believe, Don't Let it End"

Let's keep this season going until May 18...............

Posted Apr 25/12 - Braves Finish 2nd in District With Loss To Sharks
The Braves could muster only 1 hit (I don't care what the home "cooked" score book showed - it was not a no-hitter) and 1 run as they lost to St. James 5-1, to finish 2nd in the district.  Dylan Thompson started for the Braves and battled mightily against Sharks hitters, a sloppy Brave defense and against the effects of a cold (he ran a fever all day) to take the loss.  Carlos Fernandez pitched the final 2 2/3 innings.  Chase Keevert produced the Braves only hit in the 7th inning and Manny Berdayes had the only rbi.

The Braves will host Berkeley High on Thursday.  Come out and support the Braves !

Posted Jul 21/11 - SOCASTEE SUFFERS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LOSS

Socastee battled mightily but lost 11-1 to a tough Florence team in the State Championship game.  The game was much closer than the final score would indicate as Socastee only trailed 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth when Florence busted it open by grinding out six runs on 3 walks and 4 hits while the Braves inexplicably didn't make a pitching change.  Florence would later tack on three more runs in the inning to end the game.

We could undermine our coaches, who volunteered their time and missed many meals away from their own families to help our boys get better, by second guessing them on why they would let our starter whom was working on three days rest (he threw 81 pitches in game one) give up 7 earned runs (and throw a total 104 pitches)  in the final inning of the championship ball game when you have six other pitchers on the team that are able to pitch, however that would be a waste of time, would be unproductive and would not change the final result.

We will never know what could have been, but the bottom line is that Florence emerged as the better team on this night.  We had a great season, winning 18 games (with a 15 game win streak) and losing only 3.  Our young men improved their skills and hopefully learned some baseball and life lessons along the way.  We thank them for their hard work and the great memories they produced with their journey through the season, playoffs and in the State tournament. We encourage them to continue to work hard to be the best ball players, students and human beings and to give thanks to all that made it possible.

We thank coach Daurity, coach Hudson, coach Renfrow and coach Chris Patrick for their  hard work and dedication to our boys.  We know you didn't have to do this, but you did and we thank you!

Gillman 22 Socastee 5

The Braves were never in the game as they surrendered 8 runs in the top of the first and trailed 20 to 2 after three innings.  It is very hard to find any positives from this performance but it is games like these that make winning so satisfying.  This absolute feeling of futility should hurt so bad that it should be the spark that feeds the flame and creates a burning desire to persevere and play winning baseball.  Anyone can play when the team is winning and things are going good, but the true measure of character is to play when everything is going against you.  This should only inspire you to work harder and when the day comes that you savor the victories, they will only be sweeter because you will know how hard you worked to make it so.  Go Braves!

Offensively, Walker Darnell was 3-3, (rbi) Kenny Taylor 2-3 (double, 2 rbi's) and Cobi Guilbeau, Manny Berdayes, Chase Cochran and Kyle Smith all had a hit a piece.

Posted Mar 14/11 - Editorial from (outside) the Press Box

Two things happened this Saturday that have to be addressed.

The first is an important one, and was the use of profanity in one of the songs that was played.  There are absolutely no excuses for this happening and I apologize.  I also commit to you that this will not happen again.  I spent approximately three hours on Friday night listening to all the new music that would be played to insure that they were profanity free; however the CD containing the inappropriate word was created for the players walk up music and was intended to be played for only a few seconds.  This author was unaware of that and played the music for an extended time while the coach was visiting the mound.  Regardless, I sincerely apologize and regret that this occurred.

The second item is not as important but one that I would like to address.  This is the matter of the ejection of a person from the scorers’ booth or press box.   While there was definitely no profanity used, (as some have suggested), there was loud vehement disagreement with the calls on the field.  Initially the point being made was that no call had been made, and when the umpires insisted that a call had been made the dispute was that it was the inappropriate call.  Regardless, it was the wrong thing to do.  Never should a spectator enact his first amendment right (freedom of speech) and embarrass an umpire.    Think about it, what if someone came to your job and the minute you made a mistake (or a few of them) and they started yelling at you and embarrassing you, wouldn’t you throw them out too?

After all why is there an expectation that the umpire will get the call correctly all the time or even most of the time?   Some of you might say because that is the reason why they get paid.  I have to disagree because they get paid whether they make all the calls correctly or not. (Think about that one)  Furthermore, I believe (and I think it has been proven somewhere) that everyone goes to work with the intention of doing a good job.  No one goes to work thinking today I am going to do a lousy job.  But it happens all the time and the reason it does is because sometimes people just don’t have the skills to do the job correctly.  Plain and simple, they are just not good at what they do. And, if umpiring is like most jobs, these underperforming employees keep getting fair evaluations keep doing a poor job and keep getting paid.  I wonder if the umpiring would improve if coaches had to write up evaluations after each game and that would determine if or how much an umpire got paid.  No, this probably won’t work because a bad call for one coach is a great call for the other coach and you would have conflicting evaluations.  Or possibly a coach might be conscious that a bad evaluation could lead to the umpire holding a grudge and to further bad calls against his team.    But this is highly unlikely, because we all know that umpires don’t hold grudges.  Really! Trust me, I know.

So I have another idea, maybe umpires should come with a warning card.  Think about it, everything today does – even when you buy a hot coffee from McDonalds the cup says, “Warning – contents inside is hot”.  Really?  Yeah Really!  This way everyone would know exactly what to expect and there wouldn’t be any surprises, and most importantly any reasons to yell or argue with umpires.  Think about it, what if you were given a card that said,

“NOTICE – umpire has difficulty making a call on the infield fly rule, he is indecisive and has a poor understanding of  Chapter VI, item 24, of the National Federation of State High School Associations Umpires manual which states:

“When the hit ball is judged to be an infield fly, the infield fly-signal is given.  It is the right hand raised overhead, with your index finger pointing at the ball. At the same time yell, “Infield fly! If fair, batter’s out!”

Maybe, it could say something like, this umpire suffers from the inability to point and yell at the same time. Then we would understand what to expect and know that the rules won’t be followed.

Likewise, umpire is not a meteorologist and does not know atmospheric conditions, thus he has difficulty understanding and implementing Chapter XII, item (6) Infield Fly (of the NFHS Umpires Manual):

“….Remember, a fair fly ball that can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort is an out; even if the ball is dropped…..Make a vocal call, “Infield fly, if fair, the batter is out!”  Do not call the play too soon; wait until the ball is on its

Downward arc, especially on windy days, so you can be sure the ordinary effort part of the rule is met.  A good guideline for ordinary effort is whether the infielder can turn and face the infield while waiting to make the catch.

If only we had this warning, wouldn’t this have saved a lot of grief for everyone?

Also,

“ CAUTION: while this is a fundamental and basic concept, the umpires have difficulty keeping track of the number of strikes on a batter and the number of outs.”

-         Then we would for sure understand what is going on when the field is cleared after only two outs and two strikes.

And lastly,

“DANGER – umpire ignores rule #5, Chapter 1 of the NFHS Umpires Manual”.  This states:

“5. Umpires are encouraged to ignore spectator comments.  If warranted, the umpire should request that the game management handle unruly or unsportsmanlike behavior from spectators.  Every crowd will include a number of people who heckle an umpire.  Many persons believe that to do so is a legitimate part of a ball game.  Fans not only lose respect for an umpire who in any way reacts to criticism, but if he gives evidence of being conscious of heckling, their criticism becomes more intense.  Umpires must ignore any and all spectator comments.”

Believe me, I am not making these rules up.  If you don't believe me, I encourage you to look them up.  Its truly amazing.

In a similar manner I am sure that the person ejected would agree to have his own warning card for the umpires stating:

“NOTE – these stands include parents and grandparents who live and die on every pitch and would appreciate a little effort and some better calls.  Failure to do so will result in loud obnoxious outbursts so we urge you to abide by chapter 1, rule 5 of the NFHS Umpires Manual.  And we will try to remember, no one goes to work wanting to do a lousy job, some just don’t have the skills.

All in all, I have it on good authority that the ejected person is sincerely remorseful for the incident and will not be conducting him self in this manner in the future. So as you rush to condemn him, let the person whom has never disagreed with an umpires call throw the first stone.  Just as I suspected, no stones.

Posted Mar 3/10 - JV at Georgetown Tourney

The Socastee Braves JV  Baseball team began its season with an impressive showing in the Georgetown  JV Tournament. With a starting lineup that includes four eighth graders and one seventh grader, the Braves scored 27 runs in three games while finishing in third place in the six team tournament.

Game 1 - The Braves hammered Andrews in the opener 12-2 in five innings while getting solid pitching from Kyle Smith (4ip, 2er, 2k) and Chase Clark (1ip, 0 hits, 0 runs). Offensively, Chase Keevert paced the attack (2-3, 3b, 3r, 4rbi) with help from Tyler Dillon (2-3, 2r), Dalton Smith (1-1, 2r), Kyle Smith (1-2, sac fly, 2rbi), Trevor Bigham (1-2, sac fly,2rbi, 1r), and Hayden Miller (1-2, 2r).

Game 2 - The late game saw a last inning rally fall short in a 5-4 loss to Georgetown. Trailing 5-1 going into the final frame, the offense clawed away, scoring 3 runs and having runners on second and third before the final out was recorded. Chase Keevert took the tough luck loss, pitching a complete game, allowing 1 earned run, and striking out 7 in four innings of work. Offensively, Kyle Smith led the way with 2 doubles and three rbi’s (2-3, 2 2b, 3 rbi). Hunter Renfrew (1-2,  r), Chase Keevert (2r), and Hayden Miller (1-1) contributed to the effort.

Game 3 - The Braves offense again flexed its muscle in the seven inning contest against Waccamaw to determine third place. Socastee prevailed 11-4 pounding out 11 hits, including a 6 hit, 7 run fourth inning. Dylan Thompson (3-4, 2b, sb) and Kyle Smith (3-4, 2b, 2rbi, 2r, sb)  did the most damage. Tyler Dillon (2-5, 1r, rbi), Hayden Miller (1-3, 2b, r, 2rbi, sb), Hunter Renfrew (1-4, rbi) and Trevor Bigham (1-4, r) rounded out the hitting. Defensively, the Braves outfielders gunned out three base runners, two by centerfielder Hunter Renfrow. Trevor Bigham (3ip, 1er, 2k) and Chase Clark (2 2/3ip, 0 runs, 3k) also pitched effectively. Special recognition goes to Dalton Smith who was hit by pitch on three consecutive plate appearances over two games.

Posted Feb 21/10 - Braves scrimmage Marion

Braves visited Marion on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.   The team is starting to look good after limited practices with strong showings by the returners as well as some new faces.

Charlie Nicholson and Travers Woodward both looked strong on the mound.   There were some good performances by younger players including Darnell Walker, Dalton Smith, Kyle Smith, and Kenny Taylor.   Defensively I thought Justin Vreeland stood out making some solid plays at short.

Posted Feb 18/10 - Braves complete first Scrimmage
Socastee Braves played their first scrimmage against Conway in cold/windy conditions.   From what I understand they looked good early with hitting from most of the starting 9.   It was tough to gauge how they would have performed in a real game with the 5 batter rule but playing under those rules made sense so the coaches could seee the full 25 player roster. Braves travel to Marion on Saturday which should provide better weather conditions.

Posted May 6/09 - Braves advance as District VIII Champs
The Braves rallied to score 8 runs in the 7th inning to get a 13-10 victory in the championship game.

Game#2 Summary - Socastee started the scoring with a Cody Rice 3 run homer in the 1st and it looked good but Hilton Head scored 3 in the bottom half of the 1st and we were tied.  We went down by a score of 9-3 in the 3rd and it looked like it was over until the Braves last at bat in the 7th inning trailing 9-5.  Jason led off the inning with a walk, a few walks later, a single by Richard Carmichael, followed by a double by Justin Vreeland and the Braves take the lead.  They add a few more (they were playing as the visitors) and go into the bottom of the 7th with a 13-9 lead.  Incredible rally.  Travers allowed a few base runners but then struck out Leitner (he hit a homer earlier) to seal the victory.  With the win they win the District VIII championship. Pitching for the Braves were Kyle Presley, Richard Carmichael, and Travers Woodward (Travers gets his 3rd victory in 3 playoff games!!!).  Getting hits for Socastee were Ayres Renfro (2-2, 2-2Bs), Tim Starkey (RBI), Jason Tomlinson (1-4, RBI), Travers Woodward (2-4, RBI), Cody Rice (1-4, HR, 3RBIs), Kyle Presley (RBI), Jake Davis (RBI), Richard Carmichael (1-2, RBI), and Justin Vreeland (3-4, 2B, 2 RBIs).

Posted May 1/09 - Socastee surprises #1 seed Hilton Head

Socastee defeats #1 seed Hilton Head 8-4 in 9 innings.  Cody Rice belts a 3 run HR to give us a 4 run lead and Travers shut them down for the last 3 innings to get the win.  Kyle Presley started on the mound and pitched 3 solid innings before giving up a few hits in the 4th.  Jason Tomlinson came in and pitched 2 shutout innings before giving way to Richard Carmichael.  Richard looked strong but gave up a few walks so Travers Woodward was brought in with the bases loaded and Greg Harrison at the plate.  Travers got him to popup to Tim to end the threat.  He then held them scoreless for 3 more innings to get his 2nd win in 2 nights!   In the top of the 9th Tim reached 1st, stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on an error on a Jason Tomlinson hit to give the Braves a 5-4 lead but the big blow was after Travers reached on a walk Cody Rice crushed a deep homer to left field to give the visitors a 4 run lead that they would hold.  Hitting for the Braves were Tim Starkey (2-5, 2RBIs), Cody Rice (1-5, HR, 3RBIs), Kyle Presley (2-5, 2B), and Jake Davis (1-4).

Island Packet Coverage (from Hilton Head)

The first seven pitchers to toe the rubber against Hilton Head Island High School in the Class 3-A playoffs Friday night all left the mound in the same manner -- frustrated, beat up and ultimately unsuccessful.

The eighth, however, pitched like a playoff ace.

Socastee's Travers Woodward shut down the Seahawks for 3 1/3 innings, the last two of which were in extra frames, to lead the Braves to an 8-4 win in nine innings against Hilton Head High in the second round of the playoffs. Woodward allowed only two hits to pick up an extra-inning victory for the second straight day after Socastee defeated Bluffton High School on Thursday night in nine innings.

"I was just trying to bear down and throw strikes," Woodward said. "You can't lose your focus when the game's on the line."

Focus was never a problem for Woodward, who entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning in a pressure-filled situation. Hilton Head High loaded the bases for Greg Harrison, but Woodward got the Seahawks' No. 3 hitter to pop out to end the inning.

The Seahawks left 12 runners on base in the game, including in eight of the nine innings. The loss throws them into the loser's bracket of the district playoffs. They'll host the winner of today's Bluffton-North Myrtle Beach matchup on Monday.

"We gave ourselves opportunities to win the game," Hilton Head High coach Chris Wells said. "We had so many chances to win but we couldn't seem to capitalize, and that makes it a tough loss to swallow."

Socastee, on the other hand, took advantage of the few chances it had against Harrison on the mound. The Braves collected just five hits in the nine-inning contest, but an errant Seahawks defense committed five errors, leading to seven unearned runs. All four runs in the ninth -- three of which came on a home-run blast from Cody Rice with two outs-- were of the unearned variety charged to reliever Elliot Van Dyke, who suffered the loss.

"Our defense was really poor. I thought we played on our heels instead of playing aggressively," Wells said. "It's hard to win when you put five errors on the board. It's darn near impossible when you do it in a playoff game."

The Seahawks fought back after giving up their first increment of unearned runs. Socastee scored four in the second, but Hilton Head High responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the third. Bruce Leitner tripled to lead off the inning, followed by a Ethan Olliff single and Michael Campbell double. All scored to tie the game.

The inning seemingly gave Harrison all the support he needed. He lasted eight innings in his 133-pitch outing and gave up no hits in the last five innings he was on the mound.

"He grinded tonight. He fought like he always does," Wells said. "He caught his groove by the middle innings. And that's Greg Harrison. He's such a bulldog."

He'll be unavailable when the Seahawks take the next step of the playoffs Monday night against either Bluffton or North Myrtle Beach. The winner of Monday's game will head to Socastee on Wednesday and be forced to upend the Braves in both ends of a doubleheader to advance past the district finals.

Posted Mar 20/09 - Braves win first region game against MB
The Braves defeat Myrtle Beach for their first region win behind the pitching of Kyle Presley and Gunnar Kines, hitting of Travers Woodward, David Rickenbacker, and Jason Tomlinson, and the game saving catch from Ayres Renfro. Kyle pitched great and when he did not strike them out he had a good defense behind him. In the 2nd, MB led off with a double but Tim picked the runner off of 2nd, and then Kyle and Tim had a strike em out, throw out to end the inning. Later in the game leading 2-1, Ayres reaches base, David hits a single to right, they steal and then MB walks Jason. Cody then hits a hard ball to 2nd and a run scores on the sacrifice. Leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the inning, the leadoff batter gets on, Gunnar strikes out #1, out #2 hits into a force, and then Ayres snatches the game tying hit from the air. It would be hard to describe how great a catch Ayres made, he stretched out after covering a lot of field, if he misses.... but he didn't and they win. Great game.
