Edmonton Cardinals Midget Performance Team Wins Birth to National!

In their 70th spring/summer game of the season the Edmonton Cardinals captured back to back Midget Performance League Championships and 3rd title in 5 years by defeating the Red Deer Braves 4-1 at Legion Park in St Albert.

Starting pitcher Michael Williams scattered 4 hits keeping Red Deer hitters off balance by changing speeds in his five and 2/3 innings of work.  Nick Smiley retired the last 4 Red Deer hitters in order.

Two big defensive plays in the game were a crisp 3-6-1 double play as Werkman fed Kosolofski who returned the throw to Williams covering the bag.  On the 2nd defensive gem JJ Grimm threw a strike to second from left field to back door a runner who rounded the bag too far and stumbled.

Offensively the pitchers were supported by 11 hits, as Cyr, Kosolofski, Scammell, and Werkman had 2 hits each with singles going to Deleeuw, Harasymchuk and Muhlethaler.  Fergusson had a sacrifice fly for an RBI.

Note:  Matthew McGee pitched in the Gold Medal game in 2009 for the Edmonton Cardinals and won as well Kyle Radke pitched in the clinching game for Spruce Grove in 2007.   All three pitchers were playing in the Midget Performance Division.
